301, I don't know the particulars of the German saboteur incident but I believe Bush used that precedent to set up the Gitmo military tribunals. Because it was done before doesn't automatically make it OK. I'm sure you know of the Japanese internment camps during WW2 - would you think it OK to repeat that disgraceful incident?
Another point is that FDR made his decisions in the context of a declared war. All those in Congress clamoring for the trials to be held in tribunal rather than civilian court should co-sponsor a Declaration of War and have it put to a vote. I'd be curious to see how that turned out. I don't know what our soldiers would call the terrorist murderers, do you? Do you think they consider them to be soldiers, just like they are? |
