Default Snow cleanup

Do any of you remember many years ago when we had a big snowstorm how quickly they cleaned things up?

I remember big plows pushing the snow into huge piles and then they loaded it into dump trucks and carted it off to who knows where.

This had to be 30 or 40 years ago. Now with all the new technology, better trucks and equipment, more employees, they can't do anything like that. Strange.

Back in the good old days, we used to get snow every few weeks it seemed. We've gone through a warming period for 20 or 30 years with milder winters and little snow, but it isn't global warming, it's just the cycle of the planet's weather. Maybe the cycle is now going back to colder, more snowy winters.

I agree the city was not very agressive about their clean-up efforts with this storm. They were very slow to clean-up my block.

Do you think it has anything to do with timing?

Perhaps they were more agressive with other storms that happen late in the winter season if there is still room in the budget to allocate to cleaning crews.

Since this storm happened so early in the season, the number crunchers decided to not allocate too much overtime money in case we get another big storm in January or February.

Just a thought.

I was out the morning the storm was supposed to arrive. There were sanitation trucks everywhere with plows and salt trucks. They were ready. Don't know what happened.

I know there is a reason they don't throw the snow in the Narrows, but I don't know what it is. Does anyone? Or DO they throw it in there?

Still no one knows what they do with that damn snow?

A man told me today they throw it into the water. I asked didn't the salt in the snow etc. ruin the environmental business of the water and he said you'd have to put a lot of salt into the water before you could ruin it.

Does anyone have an answer yet?

My mother, who is now 93, told me that years ago the trucks collected the snow and dumped it into the river or, in our case, the narrows.

As far as street salt which will get dumped with the snow these days, aren't we still right off the Atlantic Ocean which is salt water?

I'd worry more about the pollutants entering the water via all the ships and boats engines because that is really affecting the waterway.

Absolutely we are right off the Atlantic, but, imagine french fries with a touch of salt. Then imagine not being able to see them because of all the salt. I just am wondering if it upsets the Ph stuff.

Someone told me yesterday that they take the trucks somewhere south of here and just let them sit in the warmer climate till it all melts and then brings the empty trucks back. That's so over the top to me that it just might be true!

In addition, there were a lot less people and a lot less cars back in the day.

Things got done at a faster clip.
